Houston Center for Valued Living is launching a 10 week Mindfulness Group for Anxiety in October 2019. We’d love to have you or someone you care about join.

Is it Anxiety?

We all know the feeling: flutters in the stomach, heart pounding faster, sweaty palms, thoughts racing a hundred miles per hour. We might experience this feeling during a presentation at school, while sitting in traffic, or simply at home, relaxing with our loved ones. Anxiety is something that we all struggle with from time to time. However, anxiety becomes problematic when it gets excessive and creates problems in day-to-day life.

Anxiety can lead to avoidance and detachment

One of the big problems that anxiety creates for many people is avoidance. The physical and psychological factors related to anxiety can feel so uncomfortable that we are ready to do almost anything to get rid of the them. Maybe you find yourself avoiding the situations that make you anxious or use a variety of different unhealthy behaviors to try to numb the sensations.

Anxiety also tends to make us detached from the here-and-now due to us constantly being in our heads, either over thinking about the past or worrying about the future. This is problematic because life happens in the present moment, not in the past or the future. Each moment is fleeting and if we are not able to pay attention to the here-and-now, we miss so many things worth experiencing.

Mindfulness Can Help Anxiety

Mindfulness has been proposed as one solution to these problem. Mindfulness is the deliberate act of focusing in the present moment non-judgmentally, with openness, compassion, and acceptance. Mindful practices are used to promote a more accepting stance towards our current experience, instead of resisting it or avoiding it. Mindfulness can be used as a tool to refocus on what is important when we find ourselves distracted by unhelpful thoughts or sensations.

Here at Houston Center for Valued Living, we want to help you live your life to its greatest potential, beginning now. We want you to feel connected, engaged, and invigorated with life. You don’t have to continue to live in avoidance, fear, or disconnection.
