Here at Houston Center for Valued Living we have a dedicated team of skilled therapists who want to see you through to your best life yet. We offer comprehensive counseling services for adults, teens, and children in the greater Houston area or via Telehealth. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, sleep problems, or depression, we have interventions that work. We are continuing our series of blog posts for you to get to know our therapists better. Today we are chatting with Sophie Tiller!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I’m from northern Indiana and grew up largely spending time with family throughout Michigan. A big part of growing up for me was living an active lifestyle and this has carried into my adult life and brings me a lot of joy. I often think there is great importance in getting outside and breathing in some fresh air (even if we are in Houston lol).
What inspired you to become a therapist?
After finishing studying at Notre Dame, I lived in Chicago serving in Americorps Tier 2 students in public school. I saw the lack of support for kids not only at school, but also at home with having someone to talk to, confide in, or work through things. I think this spoke to a role I have grown up in as an oldest sibling, and I wanted to be a figure of support and change for adolescents and young adults that may be looking to grow in their own lives.
How long have you been practicing as a therapist?
I have been practicing as a licensed therapist under supervision for a year and a half.
What types of clients and issues do you specialize in?
I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults with OCD and anxiety disorders. I find that these disorders take a lot of freedom and sense of self away from an individual and I hope to lead them back to seeing their own strength and power.
Do you have any particular therapeutic approaches or techniques that you prefer?
I specialize in using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD and anxiety disorders. Additionally, I often utilize motivational interviewing and behavioral activation throughout sessions with adolescents and young adults.
What can a client expect during a typical therapy session with you?
Depending on the session, the client can expect various forms of learning with psychoeducation, understanding stuck points or barriers they encounter while engaging in treatment, forming insight and awareness of how our thoughts and behaviors affect our overall mental health, and challenging ourselves to constantly take steps forward building our sense of confidence and self-efficacy when facing our fears.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time or as a form of self-care?
A large amount of my free time is spent finding the best coffee and playing in a couple of soccer leagues throughout Houston. I really enjoy being active with friends through team sports, building new friendships and eating really good food afterwards.
Where are you located, and what are your hours of operation?
I am located at our Montrose location and through telehealth. Generally my hours of operation are 9-5 M-F.
How can potential clients get in touch with you to schedule an appointment?
To get in touch with me to schedule an appointment reach out to our office number or feel free to email me at sophie@hcfvl.com
What advice do you have for someone who is considering therapy for the first time?
My advice for people considering therapy for the first time is to be as open as possible with your therapist. We are only able to help individuals with what they share with us. Nothing is too taboo to talk about, so let’s get talking about the hard things to find freedom from them.
